Although, there is no written rule from the IRS, the refund is usually processed quickly as long as there are no issues with the return. Federal income tax returns can be filed beginning in mid-January of the proceeding year up to April 15th.

Tax refunds could be delayed if government shutdown drags on. Tax season is expected to begin Jan. 29, even after the government shutdown. But if the shutdown isn’t resolved, some tax refunds could be delayed.
