Women’s times at these marks are about 19-25% slower than men’s. Scrounging around the internet, for men, a 55 second time is high school JV level, a 51 second time is about varsity level, and around 47 seconds you’re an elite 400m high school runner.

Perhaps 20% of them can run a 400 meter lap without stopping and walking. I would say that half of the 80% who walk misjudge the distance and thus did not pace themselves correctly however if you take that into consideration i would not be to enthused about their performance. But 70 seconds is good time.

Is it possible to run 50 seconds in the 400m?
One thing to remember about the 400m is that it isn’t as much about speed as it is about conditioning. I would recommend practicing at about 80% speed for 500 or 600m around 8 times around 4 times a week to get your time below 50 seconds. That is actually the time I am currently going for too. It’s very possible, but it’ll take a ton of hard work.
