A courageous, resourceful and ruthless military commander, Major-General Robert Clive helped secure an Indian empire for Britain. He eventually became an imperial statesman, but also a greedy speculator who used his political and military influence to amass a fortune.
How did Clive died?
Their son Edward was later governor of Bengal and created Earl of Powis. Robert was granted an Irish peerage and finally returned to England for good due to ill health. He then stood for Parliament. He died of an overdose of opium on 22nd November 1774 and is buried at St Margaret’s church at Moreton Say in Shropshire.

Do you have to book to go to Powis Castle?
The castle, garden, cafés and shops are open. We have removed the booking system so you no longer need to book in advance. Last entry to the castle and Clive museum is at 3.30pm (30 minutes before closing).
Why was Clive bad?
Leading historians view Robert Clive as unworthy of celebration since his reputation falls far short of the values demanded of public office and because his administrative failures led to the catastrophic Bengal famine of 1769–1773. He has been described as the ‘worst corporate figure in British history’.
When did Clive leave India?
Clive left Calcutta in January 1767. His second government was his crowning achievement, but he had made many enemies. An active group, supported by Lord Chatham, feared the corrupting influence of Indian wealth on English public life.
